The rocker panel runs below the doors and may appear to be a simple cosmetic strip. On many unibody vehicles, however, it is a layered structural area that connects the pillars, floor, and side body while helping manage side-impact and rollover loads.
What can be hidden inside
The visible outer rocker may cover inner reinforcements, high-strength steel sections, jack points, drain paths, wiring, and attachment flanges. A dent in the outer surface does not reveal whether inner layers or nearby pillar bases have moved.
Signs the damage may be structural
• Door gaps change or the door contacts the body
• The pinch weld or lift point is crushed
• The floor or pillar base is distorted
• Water enters after rain or washing
• Trim no longer fits
• The vehicle cannot be lifted safely at the normal point
Why repair methods vary
Some outer rocker damage may be repairable. Other designs require partial or complete replacement at manufacturer-approved locations. Layered reinforcements, ultra-high-strength steel, aluminum, adhesives, and factory weld patterns determine what is permitted.
Measurement and access
Technicians may need to remove trim, seats, carpet, or adjacent panels to inspect attachment areas and protect the interior during welding. Door-opening and lower-body measurements help confirm whether damage extends beyond the visible dent.
Corrosion protection is essential
Cutting and welding disturb factory coatings in a moisture-prone location. Primer, seam sealer, cavity wax, drain paths, and chip-resistant coatings must be restored correctly.
Car Geeks Collision can inspect rocker damage from the exterior, interior, and structural perspectives. Arrange an assessment if a side impact, curb, or improper lift crushed the area below a door.
