If your R1T or R1S has been in an accident, you have three realistic choices in South Florida: a shop in Rivian’s own certified collision network, an independent shop that repairs EVs to Rivian’s published procedures, or a general body shop. The right pick depends on the damage, your insurer and how the shop handles high-voltage safety, calibration and parts. Below is how they compare and what to verify before you authorize anything.

Key Takeaways

  • Rivian’s published guidelines call for a Rivian Certified Technician, approved tooling and a certified collision center for certain repairs, so ask every shop exactly which repairs it will perform and to which procedure.

  • Structural work on a Rivian follows model-specific procedures and an approved frame-bench system. Ordinary pulling is not the default.

  • Almost every Rivian repair ends with diagnostic scans and camera or sensor calibration, so confirm that is in the estimate.

  • Rivian recommends its own Original Equipment parts and advises against salvaged or recycled SRS and Driver+ components.

  • Get the repair plan, parts type and timeline in writing before work begins.

Heavy structural or battery-area damage where Rivian’s guidelines require certified status

Cosmetic, panel, bumper, paint and many mid-level repairs, plus claim guidance

Minor cosmetic work, if the shop shows EV competence

No option is automatically best. What matters is whether the shop can do the specific repair your vehicle needs, the way Rivian says it must be done. If your damage falls into a category Rivian reserves for its certified network, a responsible shop tells you so up front and helps you with next steps.

What Rivian’s own guidelines require

Rivian’s repair guidelines call for a Rivian Certified Technician, approved tooling and a Rivian Certified Collision Center. They also require diagnostic scans before and after repairs, so trouble codes are found and cleared and vehicle systems are verified.

Structural repairs that need fixtures or jigs must be done by a certified technician on an approved frame-bench system. That means at least eight specified fixturing points, plus any extra points the bench maker requires. Rivian also plans onsite audits of its certified centers to check adherence to its published procedures.

Those are the standards we hold ourselves to on every EV: work from the OEM procedure, scan before and after, and document the result. You can see how we approach these vehicles on our Rivian collision repair page and in our guide to what makes EV repairs different.

Panel repair or panel replacement

Rivian’s material guidance prefers paintless dent repair and glue-pulling when appropriate. That is good news for door dings and light creases, because it keeps factory panels and finish. Our overview of whether paintless dent repair is safe explains when it fits.

Some parts cannot be repaired at all. According to I-CAR’s structural straightening report, Rivian does not allow repairs to aluminum extrusions, ultra-high-strength steel or press-hardened steel. Those parts need full replacement using vehicle-specific procedures. The same report says Rivian does not recommend structural pulling outside strict, scenario-specific guidelines, because it can compromise mixed-material structures.

I-CAR frames the repair-or-replace call as a holistic evaluation of material, damage severity, location, access to structural adhesives and the ability to restore factory corrosion protection. For a quote on a panel replacement, ask:

  1. Which material is the panel made of?

  2. Does Rivian’s procedure allow repair, or only replacement?

  3. How will the panel be attached (adhesive, rivets, welds)? Our post on structural adhesives and rivets shows why this matters.

  4. How will corrosion protection be restored?

For frame or structural damage, our structural repair service is where to start. Tell us the damage and we will say plainly what the procedure allows.

High-voltage safety comes first

Rivian’s battery handling guidance says to treat the battery and high-voltage components as energized and fully charged until the service-manual disabling procedure verifies otherwise. Exposed HV parts can cause serious injury or death.

For you as an owner, that translates into a few practical rules after a hard hit:

  • If you see smoke, sparks, flames, fumes, or bubbling or gurgling sounds, move away and call 911.

  • Do not charge a damaged vehicle, and do not store it inside a garage.

  • Rivian’s guidance says to contact Rivian before anyone services a significantly damaged pack.

  • Ask your shop how it de-energizes the vehicle and who performs that step.

Our article on EV battery safety after a collision covers the same principles across EVs.

Calibration and diagnostics are part of the repair

Because Rivians carry many cameras and sensors, almost every repair will require calibration, and a facility needs in-house diagnostics or a partnership with a certified diagnostic center. Even a bumper cover or windshield job can disturb a sensor’s aim.

We perform ADAS calibration and sensor alignment in house. If you are budgeting, see what calibration costs drivers in 2026, and if your lane-keeping acts up after a repair, use our lane assist checklist.

OEM, aftermarket and recycled parts

Rivian’s replacement parts position says its Original Equipment parts are made to the same specifications and tolerances as parts on new vehicles. Rivian does not recommend aftermarket, salvaged, used or recycled parts. It specifically warns against salvaged SRS and Driver+ ADAS components and advises replacing damaged or one-time-use fasteners with new Original Equipment ones.

Rivian guidance on collision repair part types

Put the part type on your estimate line by line. If your policy or insurer pushes a cheaper part, you can ask the shop to document why it does not meet Rivian’s position. Parts lead times on newer EVs can stretch your timeline, so ask for an expected parts arrival and a status update schedule in writing.

Once the repair is finished, a protective layer helps keep Florida sun from dulling new paint. This guide to paint protection in Miami explains the options.

Insurance estimates and authorization

You choose the repair shop, not your insurer. A good process looks like this:

  1. Photograph the damage and the scene, and report the claim.

  2. Have the vehicle towed on a flatbed. We can help with towing.

  3. Get a teardown-based estimate that lists procedures, parts type and calibration.

  4. Review supplements as hidden damage appears, which is common on EVs.

  5. Confirm the post-repair scan report before you pick the car up.

Our insurance claim assistance helps you through those steps, and we offer courtesy loaner vehicles when available.

Our perspective

We repair Rivians the way an owner would want a friend in the trade to repair one: from the manufacturer’s procedure, with scans before and after, with calibration included and with every part type spelled out.   We are an independent shop, so our loyalty is to you and your vehicle, not to an insurer’s cost target. We use OEM repair procedures and advanced collision-repair technology, we coordinate your claim, and we back our work with a lifetime workmanship warranty.   If Rivian’s guidelines place your damage in a category that calls for its certified network, we will tell you straight, because getting it right matters more than getting the job.   Anns

FAQ

Does my Rivian have to go to a Rivian Certified Collision Center?

Rivian’s repair guidelines call for a certified technician and a certified center for specified repairs, including structural work that needs a frame bench. For other repairs, ask your shop which procedure it follows. Rivian’s own support page lists its certified centers.

Can a dented Rivian panel be repaired?

Often, yes, if the material and damage allow it. Rivian prefers paintless dent repair or glue-pulling where appropriate, but it does not allow repairs to aluminum extrusions, UHSS or press-hardened steel. Those parts get replaced.

Will I need ADAS calibration after a Rivian repair?

Very likely. Rivian vehicles rely on many cameras and sensors, and almost every repair requires calibration. Ask for the before and after scan reports and the calibration record.

Can I use aftermarket or recycled parts on my Rivian?

Rivian does not recommend aftermarket, salvaged, used or recycled parts, and it warns against salvaged SRS and Driver+ ADAS components. Ask for Original Equipment parts on your estimate.
